Goa Shipyard and INS Hansa
Goa Shipyard Limited runs from Vasco da Gama, a Ministry of Defence public sector undertaking. It began in 1957 as Estaleiros Navais de Goa, a Portuguese yard building barges for the mining trade, and was taken over for military construction after Goa's annexation in December 1961. It has since built more than one hundred and sixty vessels, patrol boats, landing craft and other tonnage for the Navy and Coast Guard and for export, and has added a slipway, a damage control simulator and heavier dry dock cranes for the repair side of the business in recent years. It is not a yard for the largest tonnage: its own stated ceiling is around fifteen thousand deadweight tonnes, well under the size of a typical modern merchant ship, which keeps its work to patrol vessels, corvettes and craft of similar scale rather than to bulk carriers or tankers.
INS Hansa, the Navy's largest naval air station, was commissioned on 5 September 1961 at Sulur in Tamil Nadu and moved to its present home at Dabolim after Goa's annexation that December. It now flies MiG-29K fighters, the Ka-31 airborne early warning helicopter, and P-8I Poseidon and Dornier 228 aircraft for maritime patrol, alongside search and rescue helicopters, and carries a shore based test facility built to the same deck layout as INS Vikramaditya, used to train pilots and deck crew for carrier landings before they ever fly aboard the ship itself.
