Arakkonam, Kattupalli and the coast north of Chennai
Arakkonam, home to NAD Arakkonam, is a Ranipet district town roughly seventy kilometres inland from Chennai. It also carries INS Rajali, the naval air station commissioned on 11 March 1992 under Southern Naval Command, one of the longer military runways on India's east coast and the base for the Navy's long range maritime patrol squadrons.
On the coast itself, Kattupalli, north of the city near Ennore, has done double duty for years. Kattupalli Shipyard built and refitted naval and commercial tonnage under L&T Shipbuilding, including sections of the Arihant class submarine programme, before Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone bought the yard in June 2018; the US Navy vessel USNS Charles Drew was serviced there in August 2022. Alongside it, Adani Ports today runs Kattupalli as a multi cargo port, moving container, bulk and liquid cargo on the same stretch of coast, with year round road access to the terminal.
INS Rajali flies the Navy's P-8I Poseidon maritime patrol squadron, INAS 312, which replaced the older Tupolev Tu-142 aircraft once based there. The airfield itself dates to 1942, built for Allied use in the Second World War and largely unused afterward until the Navy took it over and rehabilitated it ahead of the 1992 commissioning.
