Ship repair and dry dock facilities in India by port

India's ship repair and dry docking capacity is concentrated at a handful of ports. Visakhapatnam has a naval dockyard and a defence shipyard; Cochin Shipyard at Kochi commissioned a 310-metre dry dock in 2024; and Kolkata's Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers docks ships inside a tide-free wet basin.

01

Visakhapatnam: Naval Dockyard and Hindustan Shipyard

Visakhapatnam's main docking facilities are the Naval Dockyard, which has three dry docks, and Hindustan Shipyard Limited, which has a dry dock, a wet basin and a repair dolphin used for ship and submarine repair and refits, plus a separate covered building dock for new construction up to about 80,000 DWT.

02

Kochi: Cochin Shipyard

Cochin Shipyard commissioned a new 310-metre-long dry dock in January 2024, able to take vessels up to about 300 metres, such as Suezmax tankers, container ships and Capesize bulk carriers. The yard, which has repaired ships since 1982, lists ship repair capability up to about 125,000 DWT and has refitted the aircraft carriers INS Viraat and INS Vikramaditya.

In April 2024, Cochin Shipyard became the third Indian shipyard to sign a Master Ship Repair Agreement (MSRA), a US Navy agreement that pre-qualifies a yard to repair Military Sealift Command and similar support vessels operating in the Central Command region.

03

Kolkata: Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers

In Kolkata, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) runs a ship repair division and, under a long-term concession with Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, operates three port dry docks inside a wet basin, so docking there does not depend on river tides.

GRSE reports multiple dry dock repairs of ships up to 160 metres in length, 20 metres in beam and 7 metres in draught, making it one of the larger repair-capable facilities on India's east coast.

04

Tracking India's dry dock capacity

New dry dock construction, such as Cochin Shipyard's 310-metre dock, is tracked at a national level under the Ministry of Shipping's Sagarmala programme, which lists major port infrastructure projects as they are built out. Facility limits change as yards invest, so current docking or shiplift limits are worth checking directly with a yard before planning a docking.
