Sea chest maintenance

A sea chest is a recess in a ship's hull below the waterline that supplies seawater to cooling and service pumps, covered by a removable grating. It is cleaned, inspected and recoated at every dry docking, and its design makes it one of the hull's recognised biofouling risk areas.

01

What a sea chest is

A sea chest is a rectangular or cylindrical recess in the hull below the waterline from which seawater cooling and service pumps draw water. It is covered by a removable grating, and is often fitted with baffle plates that smooth the flow of water into it at speed or in a seaway.

Sea valves and strainers sit between the chest and the pumps it feeds, controlling and filtering the flow before it reaches machinery that depends on a steady seawater supply.

02

Cleaning and inspection in dry dock

In dry dock the gratings are removed and the sea chest is cleaned of barnacles, silt and marine growth, then inspected for corrosion and cracks before being recoated. Grating fastenings, gaskets and bolts are checked for watertight integrity at the same time.

Anodes fitted inside the chest are renewed as part of this work, and the sea valves connected to the chest are overhauled and pressure-tested before the ship is refloated, so a fault found here does not surface again once the ship is back in service.

This cleaning, inspection, anode renewal and valve overhaul are normally carried out together, in the same docking, because the chest sits below the waterline and cannot be fully opened up while the ship is afloat.

03

Sea chests as a biofouling risk area

International biofouling guidance names sea chests, alongside features such as bow thrusters and hull appendages, as "niche areas": recesses whose number, location and design make them a particular biofouling risk compared with the flatter, easier-to-clean hull plating around them.

Because a sea chest is recessed and often has lower water flow than the open hull, fouling can build up inside it even where antifouling paint on the main hull is still effective, which is part of why gratings and internal surfaces get their own inspection at every docking rather than being assumed clean.

Sea chest maintenance

What is a sea chest on a ship?

A sea chest is a rectangular or cylindrical recess in the hull below the waterline from which seawater cooling and service pumps draw water. It is covered by a removable grating and often fitted with baffle plates to smooth flow at speed or in a seaway. Sea valves and strainers sit between the chest and the pumps.

How is a sea chest cleaned and inspected in dry dock?

In dry dock the gratings are removed and the sea chest is cleaned of barnacles, silt and marine growth, inspected for corrosion and cracks, and recoated. Grating fastenings, gaskets and bolts are checked for watertight integrity, anodes inside the chest are renewed, and the connected sea valves are overhauled and pressure-tested.

Why are sea chests treated as a biofouling risk?

International biofouling guidance identifies niche areas such as sea chests, bow thrusters and hull appendages as locations where the number, location and design of the recess increase biofouling risk compared with open hull plating. Lower water flow inside the chest lets fouling establish even where the main hull coating is still effective.

What is fitted inside a sea chest besides the grating?

A sea chest typically has baffle plates to smooth incoming flow, sacrificial anodes for corrosion protection, and sea valves and strainers where it connects to the pumps it feeds. All of these are inspected and, where needed, renewed or overhauled during a dry docking.

Are sea chest anodes renewed at every docking?

Anodes inside the sea chest are inspected at every docking and renewed when they are substantially consumed, the same practice applied to hull anodes generally. Unusually fast wastage inside a sea chest is worth investigating in the same way as on the open hull.

When is sea chest cleaning normally carried out?

Sea chest cleaning, inspection, anode renewal and sea valve overhaul are normally carried out together in dry dock, when the grating can be removed and the recess fully accessed. The chest sits below the waterline, so this work is scheduled around the same docking as the ship's other underwater checks rather than done separately while afloat.
