Guide 02 Quality assurance and type approval
What is JSS 55555, the environmental test specification?
JSS 55555 is India's Joint Services Specification of environmental test methods for electrical and electronic equipment used by the armed forces. It sets out how equipment is tested against heat, cold, humidity, salt, mould, rain, dust, vibration and shock before it is accepted for service.

What the specification covers
JSS 55555 is approved by the Directorate of Standardisation, Ministry of Defence, and is applied through the Directorate General of Quality Assurance (DGQA) and its naval arm, DQA(N). It does not describe one product. It describes methods: how to run a vibration test, how to run a damp heat test, how to run a shock test, so that a test report from one laboratory means the same thing as a test report from another.
A buyer's own specification, such as a Statement of Operational Requirement (SOTR) or an equipment drawing, calls out which JSS 55555 tests apply to a given item, at what severity and for how long. JSS 55555 supplies the method; the equipment specification supplies the numbers.

The test families in the 2012 edition
The 2012 edition lists around 31 test methods, grouped broadly into climatic tests, mechanical tests and combined or special tests. A newer edition, JSS 55555:2020 Rev-4, is now the specification named on current naval qualification records, but its test list was not reviewed for this guide, so only the 2012 edition is described here.
- Climatic: dry heat, low temperature, damp heat (steady state and cyclic), rapid temperature cycling, solar radiation, tropical exposure, icing
- Contamination and ingress: salt corrosion (salt fog), mould growth, dust, drip proof, driving rain, immersion, sealing
- Mechanical: vibration, bump, shock, drop, toppling, roadability
- Combined and special: combined temperature, humidity and vibration; combined temperature, humidity and altitude; explosion protection

Where the tests are carried out
A DGQA laboratory at the Controllerate of Quality Assurance (Electronics), Western Region, in Bangalore, runs environmental tests to JSS 55555 and other defence specifications as part of type testing, and makes its facilities available to private industry on payment when capacity allows.
NABL-accredited private laboratories also test to JSS 55555. Which laboratory's report an inspecting authority will accept depends on the equipment's own test specification and on the authority named in the purchase order or quality assurance plan, so it is worth confirming the laboratory before the sample is built rather than after.

Reading a JSS 55555 test schedule
A qualification schedule built on JSS 55555 lists each applicable test with its own condition, not a single pass or fail line. A published schedule for a type-approved naval power supply, for instance, states its damp heat test as 40 degrees Celsius, at least 93 percent relative humidity, held for 16 hours, and its vibration test as 5 to 33 Hz at 0.125 millimetre constant displacement, run on all three axes. Those numbers, not the specification number alone, are what a design has actually been proven against.

Questions people also ask
What is JSS 55555, the environmental test specification?
What is JSS 55555 used for?
It is the Indian armed forces' specification of environmental test methods for electrical and electronic equipment. Design authorities and inspecting authorities use it to decide which tests, such as vibration, damp heat, salt corrosion or shock, an item must pass before it is accepted, and how each test is to be run so results are comparable across laboratories.
Who approves JSS 55555 and keeps it current?
The Directorate of Standardisation, Ministry of Defence, approves the specification. It is applied in practice through the Directorate General of Quality Assurance and its service-specific directorates, including DQA(N) for naval equipment, which reference it in quality assurance plans and type approval schedules.
How many tests does JSS 55555 contain?
The 2012 edition lists around 31 test methods across climatic, mechanical and combined categories. The current edition cited on recent naval type approval schedules is JSS 55555:2020 Rev-4; its exact test list was not verified for this guide, so treat the 2012 count as a general indicator rather than the current figure.
Is JSS 55555 the same as MIL-STD-810?
No. They are separate specifications from separate defence establishments, India's Ministry of Defence and the United States Department of Defense respectively, and each has its own test methods, conditions and severities. Equipment qualified to one is not automatically qualified to the other, and a tender that calls for JSS 55555 should not be answered with a MIL-STD-810 report alone.
Can a private company get equipment tested to JSS 55555?
Yes. NABL-accredited private laboratories offer JSS 55555 testing, and the DGQA laboratory at CQAE (WE), Bangalore, also accepts industry work on payment when it has spare capacity. The inspecting authority named in the purchase order or quality assurance plan decides which laboratory's report it will accept.
Does passing JSS 55555 tests mean an item is type approved?
Not on its own. Environmental testing to JSS 55555 is normally one part of a wider type approval process that also covers the quality assurance plan, approved drawings, and inspection and acceptance trials conducted or witnessed by the inspecting authority, such as DQA(N) for naval stores.
