What are India's defence industrial corridors, in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu?
India has two notified Defence Industrial Corridors: one across six nodes in Uttar Pradesh, run by UPEIDA, and one across five nodes in Tamil Nadu, run by TIDCO. No other state, including Telangana or Andhra Pradesh, has a nationally notified corridor of its own.

The nodes, state by state
The Uttar Pradesh corridor runs across six nodes: Aligarh, Agra, Jhansi, Kanpur, Chitrakoot and Lucknow, with the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority as the nodal agency. The Tamil Nadu corridor runs across five: Chennai, Hosur, Coimbatore, Salem and Tiruchirappalli, with the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation as the nodal agency. Both states run their own aerospace and defence policy incentives on top of the corridor designation itself.
The nodal agency is the state body a company actually deals with for land, infrastructure and incentive approvals inside a corridor node: UPEIDA in Uttar Pradesh, TIDCO in Tamil Nadu. That is a separate relationship from national defence procurement, industrial licensing or quality assurance, all of which apply to a supplier the same way whether it sits inside a corridor node or outside one.
- Uttar Pradesh (UPEIDA): Aligarh, Agra, Jhansi, Kanpur, Chitrakoot, Lucknow
- Tamil Nadu (TIDCO): Chennai, Hosur, Coimbatore, Salem, Tiruchirappalli

What the corridors have attracted, as last officially reported
The most recent official figures traceable to the Ministry of Defence date to April 2023: the Uttar Pradesh corridor held memoranda of understanding worth Rs 12,191 crore, with Rs 2,445 crore actually invested at that point, and Tamil Nadu held arrangements worth Rs 11,794 crore, with Rs 3,894 crore invested. Newer figures circulate in the press but were not confirmed against an official release, so treat any later number with that caveat until it is checked directly.

Why other states are not on this list
A Defence Industrial Corridor is a specific, nationally notified designation, and only Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu carry one. That does not mean other states are absent from defence manufacturing: Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, for example, host established defence public sector units, quality assurance establishments and shipyards of their own, run under state-level industrial policy rather than a Defence Industrial Corridor designation.

Questions people also ask
What are India's defence industrial corridors, in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu?
How many Defence Industrial Corridors does India have?
Two: one across six nodes in Uttar Pradesh, run by UPEIDA, and one across five nodes in Tamil Nadu, run by TIDCO. No other state has a nationally notified Defence Industrial Corridor of its own, though several states run their own separate aerospace and defence industrial policies alongside the two corridors.
Which cities are inside the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor?
Six nodes: Aligarh, Agra, Jhansi, Kanpur, Chitrakoot and Lucknow, with the Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority as the nodal agency coordinating investment and infrastructure across them. A company setting up inside one of these nodes deals with UPEIDA directly for the corridor-specific incentives, separately from any national defence procurement or licensing process.
Which cities are inside the Tamil Nadu Defence Industrial Corridor?
Five nodes: Chennai, Hosur, Coimbatore, Salem and Tiruchirappalli, with the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation as the nodal agency. As with the Uttar Pradesh corridor, the state incentives run alongside, not instead of, national defence procurement and licensing requirements that apply anywhere in India.
How much investment have the two corridors actually attracted?
The last officially traceable figures, from April 2023, show the Uttar Pradesh corridor with Rs 12,191 crore in memoranda of understanding and Rs 2,445 crore invested, and Tamil Nadu with Rs 11,794 crore in arrangements and Rs 3,894 crore invested. More recent numbers appear in press coverage but were not confirmed against an official release at the time of writing.
Does Telangana or Andhra Pradesh have its own Defence Industrial Corridor?
No. India's two nationally notified Defence Industrial Corridors are in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu only. Telangana and Andhra Pradesh instead have their own state-level aerospace and defence industrial policies and host established defence organisations of their own, which is a different mechanism from a Defence Industrial Corridor designation.
What is a nodal agency, and why does it matter inside a corridor?
A nodal agency is the state body responsible for coordinating land, infrastructure and incentive approvals inside a Defence Industrial Corridor: UPEIDA for Uttar Pradesh's six nodes, TIDCO for Tamil Nadu's five. It is a state-level point of contact for the corridor's own incentives, separate from the national procurement, licensing and quality assurance authorities a defence supplier deals with wherever it is located.
